Dear Student,

Please read to the bottom of this page before you start navigating.  This web site is designed for students who are planning to go to college.  There will be links relating to schools, colleges and universities focusing on the San Francisco Bay Area, however, there will be links for colleges throughout the State of California.  In addition, this site includes suggestions for those who learn differently.

May these links offer you a small taste of your capacity to transform; to grow in whatever way that gives you personal and community joy.  Scroll down to learn more about how you can develop your self advocacy skills.

What is it you need to know about surviving and succeeding in college?

The features of this website will hopefully help you gain the knowledge and security to strengthen your position as a new college student. Please read through this entire introduction before you start with the first two links in the order suggested.

1. "Interest Surveys"

By completing an interest survey, you will be armed with information you can use to pursue a course work of study that may evolve into a beneficial career match.

2. "How You Learn"

Discovering your learning style is important for you, as when you know about how you learn you can begin to support yourself by understanding how to talk to faculty about your needs.

Familiarize yourself with the chapters on Legal Issues,  Certificate and Degree programs.

Equipped with your learning style and your interest survey results, you are now ready to visit your counselor and schedule your classes. If you have had an active Individualized Educational Program (I.E.P.),  or a 504 Plan, within the last three years, you may receive preferential scheduling.

Before you start clicking, know that research shows that the most valuable skill for a student to acquire in the existing educational system in the United States is self-advocacy, the ability to speak up for oneself. The completion of activities from the first three links may help you build stronger self advocacy skills. This site offers only a small portion of resources. There are many more. If this is not sufficient for you, keep on advocating for yourself with people in authority because you will be successful once you understand how the dominant culture works.

This site is designed to help you, the student with or without a  learning differently style,  access the programs, counseling, and assistance available to you. It deals with basic, practical information. It takes you through the application process, scheduling, and offers strategies to succeed with final tests. College is about independence, though a few support systems do exist. The answers to many of your questions and concerns are just a click away!

Use the first three icons as portals in the order suggested. Each image leads to valuable information, the information that will help you become a student who succeeds. Accessing the links may provide you with a deeper understanding of the following topics:

• Knowing yourself

• Understanding your learning style

• Knowing the details of your 504 plan

• Knowing your legal rights

The more you know, the better you will be able to discuss these issues confidently with your teachers and counselors.

To begin, please select a link from the navigation bar to the left.

Won't that certificate or diploma look great on your wall?

Best Regards,

Jeanie Baxter
